Welcome to
Gummy Smile Surgery |
| A gummy smile occurs when
too much gum tissue, or gingiva, is displayed when a patient
speaks or smiles. |
|
This
condition can occur in either the upper or lower arch of the
mouth, but is most commonly found in the upper jaw.
A gummy
smile can be caused by several factors. For instance, if the
upper jaw bone (maxillary bone) is much larger in general than
the lower jaw bone, the upper lip may appear stretched when a
person speaks or smiles, creating the appearance of a gummy
smile. |
|
A gummy
smile may also occur when over-active upper lip muscles pull
the lip upwards, causing an excessive display of gum tissue
when smiling. |
|
Another
cause of a gummy smile is the formation of too much bone over
the outer surfaces of the teeth, creating the appearance of
a bulge of gum tissue above the teeth. |
|
Yet
another cause of a gummy smile occurs when there is incomplete
recession of gum tissue as the adult teeth erupt into the
mouth. The teeth will look disproportionately small in
relation to other anatomic facial features. |
| It has
also been reported that certain medications can cause
excessive gum tissue proliferation, a side effect known as
gingival hyperplasia. |
|
No matter
what may be the cause of a gummy smile appearance, patients
with this condition often feel uncomfortable when they smile
because of their excessive display of gum tissue. If they
choose to reduce their excessive gum tissue display, there are
several gummy smile surgery options available. Depending upon
the amount of gum reduction necessary, the amount of available
bone surrounding the teeth, or the amount of attached gingival
tissue available around each tooth, the patient may require
either a gingivectomy or gingival crown lengthening. Both of
these surgical procedures reduce the amount of gum tissue
displayed. No matter what technique is required, the results
are always a more attractive looking smile! |
